Milwaukee Overpass Green Infrastructure

CLIENT: Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District (MMSD)

LOCATION: Milwaukee, WI

SCOPE: Master Planning

STATUS: In Progress

Human Nature collaborated with Strand Associates to create a green infrastructure stormwater master plan for a residual landscape located below a complex interstate overpass. The site, situated between downtown Milwaukee and the industrial Menominee River Valley, is underutilized and uninviting, and it generates a substantial amount of stormwater runoff. The master plan addresses these challenges by collecting, conveying, and treating stormwater from the site and many of the overpass downspouts. Designed wetlands treat the runoff before it re-enters the underground storm system. To improve the appearance and activate the site, the plan proposed new connective pathways, interpretive features, artwork on the overpass columns, and recreational opportunities, such as an urban mountain biking course, pump track, and bike polo court. Native plantings will mitigate the need for irrigation, connect the project to the historical native landscape, and help cleanse the runoff.
