The Northern Kentucky Sanitation District (SD1) serves as a regional model for stormwater best management practices (BMPs), and is a local guide for implementation of Phase Two of Clean Water Standards from the EPA. Features of the master plan include; a green roof, permeable pavements, wetland filters, a small lake, a stormwater garden and outdoor classroom for teaching, an above-ground aqueduct and cistern for the storage and reuse of rainwater, trails, an amphitheater, two overlooks to the Banklick Creek, and a tribute to those in public service. The facility is open to the public and serves as a laboratory for teaching the next generations of children, developers, local communities and public agencies for caring about our water resources. In 2002 The Kentucky Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects recognized SD1 with the Honor Award with Excellence.
